Frequently Asked Questions.
How does a doula differ from my OB or midwife?
We play very different roles! As your doula, I will not provide any medical care, exams, or diagnosis. A doula is a supportive role within your birth team in which I will provide emotional and physical support, as well as education so that you feel prepared and confident in your decision making.
What will we discuss during prenatal meetings?
I like to organize the content of meetings so that we are sure to cover important things like the birth process, your birth preferences, positions, pain management, your concerns or apprehensions and anything else that may come up. Prenatals are your time to ask and discuss whatever comes up for you!
What if my partner can’t attend meetings?
I understand! Life is busy and sometimes it's challenging to get two people on the same schedule. I am able to send meeting summaries along with corresponding informational handouts and videos to ensure that anyone who is unable to attend a meeting doesn't miss out on the important education.
What if my pregnancy is/becomes high risk?
The only thing that might change should your pregnancy become high risk is the content of the education I provide and perhaps my ability to physically attend your birth (in the case of a cesarean, as hospitals typically only allow partners in the OR). Otherwise, I will still be a constant and supportive member of your support team!
Can I still get an epidural?
YES!! As your doula, it is my job to support you in the decisions you make, including pain management. I will support whatever choice you make regarding an epidural and will also support you with comfort techniques and positions that work well with the circumstances that come with it!
Can I still contact you after the birth with questions?
Please do! New parenthood can be overwhelming at first and I would love to be able to steer you in the right direction if ever you feel unsure. We will have one postpartum check in visit, however, I am always just a phone call (or text) away!
